PLAQUE PROJECT / URBAN INTERVENTION

RESEARCH    WORKS    WRITING    ABOUT
A counter-mapping project in which I along with a rock -climber friend Jean MacRae surreptitiously affixed a series of 15 “historic” plaques on buildings throughout the City of Vancouver. Based upon the formal design of the original 1986 – 1996 commemoration plaques, the counter-plaques I produced acknowledge the prosaic and daily lived experiences of the communities rather than the singular achievements that constitute the official narratives of Vancouver’s history. At last count four of these guerrilla plaques were still up some 25 years later. An anonymous map indicating their locations was secretly distributed in bookstores at the time.

Description: 15 aluminium die-cut plaques with vinyl lettering and silicon adhesive. Printed location map on card.
